3 Ways to Prevent Falls at Your Home

Every year, thousands of people are hurt while visiting the home of a friend, family member or other person because they fall. Most of these falls are minor and result in nothing more than an injury to an ego. However, others end up leading to costly home insurance claims.

For example, if a person trips on a loose carpet and hits their head on a wall, it may lead to extensive injuries. This can amount to thousands of dollars’ worth of medical bills, lost time at work and pain and suffering.

Having home insurance is essential because it can help to minimize the financial risk to you in these situations. However, in order to receive protection from your insurance policy, it is also important to ensure you take steps to prevent falls from occurring in the first place.

What steps can you take as a homeowner to minimize the risk and likelihood that a fall will occur? There is no way to eliminate the risk, but there are some steps you can take to lessen it.

  • Remove any objects from the floor that should not be there. This is very important on stairs where the risks of a fall are higher. Foreign items include any type of water or liquid, objects like toys or surface covers (like carpets) that are not tacked into place.

  • Ensure your home's stairs, including those leading into and out of the home, are level, wide enough for a foot-step and have a handrail in place. It is also important to ensure the handrail is in good condition and stable.

  • Minimize traffic to problem areas. If your floors were just waxed, ask people not to walk on them. If there is an area of your home where the roof leaks, avoid using that area until it is repaired. If there is an area where a risk is present, do not allow people to walk into it.

These may seem like simple steps to take, but they are the best ways to minimize the most common types of falls. If you take these steps and do anything you can to avoid accidents, yet they still happen, your home insurance can help you cover losses from these incidents.
